Needed: New Job

Although I knew that my current job at the Newberry Library is just until the end of August, I whiled away last month searching for a sublease and adjusting to life in the Windy City. Last week I found out that even if the Newberry were to offer me a full-time job (which they might: one of my co-workers is leaving), the starting salary for someone with a bachelor's is only $15,000 a year. To put this in perspective: I made $19,000 in six months in London. Granted, that was with the nice exchange rate and one of the higest costs of living in the world, but still.

So it comes down to this: I can't live in Chicago on only $15,000/year.

I'm panicking a bit (okay, a lot), but have resolved to do all I can to find a higher-paying job. I have two months, right?

I've narrowed down my possibilities to things I'm actually qualified to do:
  • Library stuff (the U. of Chicago has an opening; so does the Chicago Public Library)
  • Study Abroad stuff (the U. of Chicago has an opening; I've subscribed to a U.S. International Education mailing list)

What I really want to do is work for the British Consulate, but they don't appear to have any job openings. Nevertheless, try I must.

Scratch that: what I really, really want to do is work for the International Visitors Center of Chicago. It would combine my love of putting on events with my love of meeting foreigners. Wow! What more could a girl ask for?! I'll have to make a trip over there and beg for a job.

In the meantime, Chicago's fun. Even if I only have two months left, I'm going to make it a fun time before moving back home to the farm in defeat. Again.

    ***UPDATE 10 July***
The Newberry's summer funding ends on the 14th of August, so I'll be out of a job sooner than I thought. My parents convinced me to say yes to rooming with my friend Alex, so hopefully I'll be able to find a something in the very near future. I've applied for two at the University of Chicago, so we'll see if my luck in the U.S. is better than my luck in the U.K.
